Tamim 1

The Tamim 1 was a small cargo ship of 687 GRT built at N.V. Scheepswerf v/h De Groot & v. Vliet (Yard No. 246), Slikkerveer, Netherlands, for H.Ebeling, Hamburg, Germany. Launched in September 1944 as the Harriet E, she was transferred to, and completed by Beckmann Werft, Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Germany in February 1945 and renamed the EMS. Ownership of the ship also was transferred to the German Navy in the same year. The ship was originally designed to be built as 56.6 meters in length. However, while at Beckmann Werft, the ship was lengthened to 62.8 meters. The ship was then re-launched in 1953 with her new length of 62.8 meters, beam of 8.9 meters, and a single diesel and propeller for a speed of 10.5 knots.

In 1954, the ship was transferred to the Gemeinwirtschaft (German government) and renamed Pamela. Transferred again in 1960 to the East German Government, and renamed Rositz until 1969 when she was renamed by the East German Government Minol 10.

Sold in 1970 to A.Alexatos ,Piraeus, Greece, and renamed Alekos. Sold again to another Greek company, E.Kourbetsoglu, in 1975 and named Mark I.

In 1979, the company of T. Sadek, Egypt, purchased the ship and renamed her the Maged. Two years later in 1981, the ship was transferred to M. Tamim Sadek (son of Tamim Sadek?) and named Tamim 1.

The Loss of the Ship:
On 03 October 1983, while sailing from Suez to Port Berenice with a cargo of bitumen oil, a fire broke out onboard the ship. The ship was abandoned shortly thereafter and the ship sank near the Ashrafi Islands. The ship’s Master is listed as the only casualty.

This wreck is on the list of dive sites with a number of dive centers in the Red Sea. However, we have found little of no information concerning this wreck itself as a dive. More research is ongoing!
